The tour begins at the carriage house, now the gift shop, where all the stable functions of the plantation occurred. Here, the guides will further explain the complicated nature of plantation life, explaining what people experiencedand what the expectations and conventions were to help set the scene for this historic tour in Nassau, Bahamas.
Across from the Carriage House is the Great House, which was the master’s dwelling on the Plantation. Guides on our history tour will take you through the ruins of the house and the business office adjacent to the building, allowing you to immerse yourself in the history of this property. Next the tour moves through a portion of the lush coppice forest where you will be told about the wildlife, native plants and animals, (birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians), and the various medicinal uses for some of the plant species of the Bahamas. This section of our historic tour allows you to learn about the local ecosystem and natural beauty of Nassau, Bahamas, and offers a lot of information and insights into how locals have used these resources in their lives and practices, too.
The next stop on the best heritage tour you’ll take is the African slave village where the plantation workers lived and farmed their small portion of the land. Here, your guide will explain the details of domestic slave life on the old plantation, including the challenges, the issues, and the rich history they created. The tour then winds its way past the Banana hole (with a quick stop), which is a large cave, believed to have been used for shelter and religious ceremonies by both Lucayan Indians and the plantation slaves. You are then taken to the cliffs of Clifton, which rise forty feet above the ocean, adjacent to an area known as “Sacred Space”.
This is a space in which carved African female statues made from the trunks of trees depict the slaves that once inhabited this land, staring out to Sea towards Africa.
